When fire units reached the scene at around 2 am, the stadium was ablaze and fire fighters could only make sure the fire did not spread to surrounding buildings The loss has been devastating for many club members and supporters, many of whom have grown up in the stadium. Adelaide 36ers coach and four-time Olympian Phil Smyth told The Advertiser, "This is simply tragic. There are a huge amount of memories I have playing basketball at the stadium". Club president and long time Sturt player, coach and administrator Rod Bauerwas positive, looking to the immediate and long-term future of the club. "While the fire has been a tragedy and the club is in a state of shock, the basketball public have shown strong support for us. Sturt will continue to prosper as one of South Australia?s premier clubs despite this temporary setback".
